Finding the Right Tea for You

Tea, in its many varieties, is an invaluable drink for our daily lives. From a mental standpoint, tea offers a moment of calm, it is the eye inside of the proverbial storm. Additionally drinking tea has a myriad of physically healing properties. Tea can benefit our heart and body, and prevent and delay aging. Because of its aesthetic health benefits there are people who begin to drink tea with no other purpose than to delay aging and lose weight. However, every tea is not made equally, and in order to reap the most benefits from tea it is important to find the right tea. Determining your body type will help you choose the right tea for you!

All tea stems from Chinese tea and Chinese tea is broken down into green tea, black tea, yellow tea, white tea, oolong tea and Heicha (dark tea). Each tea has different characteristics, which in turn have different effects on the human body.


Of all the tea variations, oolong tea is the mildest which makes it a good choice for the widest population.


Black tea is warm and mild, it is the perfect choice for people who have digestive issues such as a sensitive stomach. Black tea is also great for those with poor circulation, which manifests itself in cold hands and feet all year around. People with weakened bodies can also benefit from the warming effects of black tea.


Pu-erh tea is also mild and warm. Pu-erh tea is known for it’s ability to digest oil, detoxify, and lower LDL Cholesterol. Storing dark tea for a while before drinking is recommended because it will result in a better taste.


On the other end of the spectrum, green tea and yellow tea have cooling properties. They are an excellent choice for people who need an energy boost. For those of us who work long hours in front of a computer, it is believed that green tea can protect against radiation. Similarly white tea is cooling, but unlike green tea it ages well. It is important to drink fresh green tea. On the other hand aged white tea is so beneficial that it can dispel toxins from the body and nurture one’s health.


Drinking three cups of tea daily is ideal for optimizing it’s health benefits. Since timing your tea is  important, the first cup should be taken after breakfast from 9 am to 10 am. Drinking tea at this time can brighten the mind, detoxify the body, and beat fatigue. A floral tea is the best choice for the morning.

The second cup of tea should be taken in the afternoon. We recommend drinking it anytime between 1 pm-3 pm. Afternoon tea can be slightly stronger, such as green tea or raw Pu-erh. Finally, the third cup of tea should be consumed after dinner. Black tea and ripe Pu-erh are best at this time because they both aid in digestion and warm the body. It is important to avoid drinking too much tea before bedtime because it can cause insomnia.

When drinking tea, it is best to drink it immediately after it is brewed. Leaving a cup of brewed tea sitting will cause the flavor and aroma to dissipate, but always allow for water to cool adequately for consumption. We recommend drinking tea 30 minutes to 1 hour after each meal. Drinking tea immediately  after each meal will impede the body from absorbing iron and protein.


Although drinking tea at the right times in the right ways can help nurture one’s body, it is important not to overdo it. Drinking copious amounts of tea with the intention of losing weight can reduce the benefits of the tea. Denong Tea wishes everyone luck in finding the right tea!
